You will probably encounter the Thieflings first. So, the Thieflings will disarm traps, while the Priests of Desna will disable enemy demons, things like that. If you have helped these and recruited them into your ranks, they will assist you during the attack, in accordance with their skills. These allies are: the Thieflings (a group of Tiefling thieves, hence the pun), Knights of the Flaming Lance, and either Halrun and his Crusaders or Ramien’s Priests of Desna.
None are mandatory, but they all make the assault much easier than it otherwise would have been.
